SDS Mechanical & Automation has driven significant productivity, enabled vertical startups, and reduced or eliminated downtime for Owens Corning. Three examples of SDS’s work in 2018 and 2019 exemplify SDS’s contributions:
First, over a shutdown at one facility over the winter holiday, the Newark pipe factory experienced a mechanical issue with the power jacks that open and close insulation ovens. SDS worked around the clock to reverse-engineer the solution to a multiple-failure situation in 72 hours. Parts fabrication and delivery from the OEM in Europe would have taken 6 weeks. The SDS team deployed onsite support to have the plant back up and running in 3 days.
Secondly, OC’s source of our SureNail® tape machines entered Chapter 7 bankruptcy while two Owens Corning machines were at the supplier’s site. Because of the bankruptcy proceedings, OC was unable to get their tape machines to meet the needed timing for the restart of a laminate line. In just 11 weeks, SDS was able to repair and redeploy a non-functioning machine from a different plant to complete the needed task.
Thirdly, SDS developed a system that will all-but eliminate the cost of drawings for Owens Corning’s future furnace rebuilds providing significant savings.
